Safety in Honduras
- According to the US Department of State, Roatán and the Bay Islands are geographically separate from and experience lower crime rates than the mainland and other Caribbean islands.
- According to International Living.com: “It is, in fact, much safer than mainland Honduras and feels infinitely safer than the U.S, Further, there is no evidence of significant gang activity or violence on the island.”
- USA Today remarks: “Roatan and the Bay Islands have significantly fewer incidents of crime and are overall much safer than mainland Honduras. The tourist presence in Roatan is enormous and has promoted a greater police presence as a result.”
- The crime rate on Roatan is low compared to many other parts of the world. In 2021, there were 1,200 reported crimes on the island. This equates to a crime rate of 1091 per 100,000 residents. For comparison, the crime rate in the United States is 2,357 per 100,000 residents, or more than double the rate in Roatan.
- Violent crime rates in Roatán are low compared to both mainland Honduras as well as the United States. The island’s violent crime rate for 2022 was 191 per 100,000, making the violent crime rate in Roatán significantly lower than the US overall (399 per 100,000).
- If Roatán were ranked as a US state, it would have the fifth lowest violent crime rate in the country, ranked behind only Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Connecticut.
